Behind The Scenes: Video Shoot Of "I Am A Winner"

Updated: Apr 20, 2020

Oli and I shot a lot of music videos together already. One thing we learned early: Don't shoot in winter!! The cold is a pain and it is such a hassle to get in and out of the coats all the time. So we decided to shoot the video for my new single "I Am A Winner" in spring. In Munich. Safe bet, right? Well …

Since I was just visiting Munich, we had one afternoon and evening to shoot the video. In the afternoon I met Oli at his amazing music and video studio Die Faktur. This is where we shot the silhouette scenes:

When I saw the test pics, I figured that I should have probably done some biceps training, haha, but the style was exactly what I had in mind. Oli simply knows what he's doing! While shooting, we started to look around for props in the studio and got ridiculous in the process: I even ended up "playing" an accordion in the video – which is (in my head at least) a homage to Nirvana and Kurt Cobain "playing" this weird guitar solo in the video of "Smells Like Teen Spirit". We definitely laughed a lot, I can tell you that. And the Bavarian theme is in there!

After a couple of hours it was time to go out and meet Tina and Heidi, the dancing queens. We got so lucky to have chosen the coldest day in spring, hooray! It was around 5° Celsius (41° Fahrenheit). And of course we had planned for summer clothes. Ha! What can you do? Rock it like a pro!

The four of us involved in the shoot met in a pub in Munich, warmed up the Bavarian way (meaning: had a beer or two), and then we got going. Luckily our friend Gitta came to the set to hang out and say hello. Each time the camera was switched off, she wrapped us into our winter coats to keep us warm. At least noone else was around because of the cold, that made things easier. This looks horribly familiar now, right? But it was shot before the corona-crisis.

In the end, we had a lot of fun, and it was a pleasure to work with Oli, Heidi and Tina (again)!! Thank youuuuu, guys! You know, being a solo artist is a nice thing, but I very much enjoy working with other creatives, and it is always fantastic if those people are friends, too.

When I released the single and the video, everyone was in lockdown somewhere. We had planned to celebrate the video release together in Germany, I was supposed to play a concert, too. Of course this was not possible, but we all wanted to celebrate anyway. So we did it online, watched the video premiere on YT together and enjoyed seeing our loving faces on the screen. It means so much to me that I was able to share that day and these moments with friends. And thank you everyone for listening, watching and supporting! I soooo so much appreciate it!
